The myth, taken from Book X of the Metamorphosis of Ovid, says that Venus, as soon as he hears the lament of Adone dying in the distance, descends on the ground above his wagon pulled by the swans, to assist him. Venus is depicted lying next to his beloved dying, the nearby sinuous bodies seem to merge into the final pain, the tapered hands and long fingers draw the despair of the moment, while the hunter dog witnesses the tragic epilogue.
