Austrian wood table by Jacob & Josef Kohn made between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Fire stamped. Jacob & Josef Kohn, also known as J. & J. Kohn, was a Viennese furniture manufacturer. Jacob Kohn (1791-1866) together with his son Josef Kohn (1814-1884) founded the company in 1849, which later became one of the leading furniture manufacturers in Austria-Hungary as well as a major competitor to Gebrüder Thonet. J. & J. Kohn collaborates with artists from the Wiener Werkstätte and Josef Hoffmann in the design of many pieces. The company merged with Mundus in 1914 and later with Gebrüder Thonet in 1921 to become the largest furniture manufacturer in the world. The Kohns receive many awards and honors for their work, for example a Spanish Royal Warrant of Appointment as suppliers to the royal household (Proveedores de la Real Casa). The works by J. & J. Kohn can be seen today in numerous museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Disseny Hub Barcelona.
