Oil painting on canvas by Vittorio Cajani entitled The Force of Destiny. Vittorio Cajani was a Turin painter born in 1848 who saw his greatest production in the second half of the 19th century. His depictions often dealt with scenes of horses or everyday popular life. The painting is painted in oil on canvas and depicts a battlefield; in the left foreground are a fallen horse and soldier while in the centre is a surviving horse intent on searching through the rubble. Light filters from the top right through a cloud of ash and dust from the violent battle that has just ended. Note the painter's ability to give a sense of tragedy through painting. The painting is signed in the lower left-hand corner and the title, The Force of Destiny, and signature are written in pencil on the back of the frame. Size of the canvas only: 29.5 x 59 cm.
