6 Wood chairs by Jacob & Josef Kohn, early 20th century

Set of six wooden tavern chairs by the brothers Jacob & Josef Kohn (Vienna), early 20th century. The Viennese company Kohn was founded in 1849 by Jacob Kohn specialising in timber; in 1867 his brother Josef joined them and they turned to furniture production. By 1882 they had branches all over Europe and became the leading Austrian manufacturer in direct competition with Thonet, thanks in part to the expiry of Thonet's patent for bentwood, which they were able to include in their production. These chairs are ideal for a rustic dining room, giving a sense of warmth and sophistication to the room. All the chairs have the company's firebrand mark and paper label of the time. Two of the chairs have had their seats restored over the years, as can be seen in the photos; the others are in a good state of preservation (see photos).
