Scaleo staircase by L&O for Velca Legnano, 1970s

This folding ladder when closed is a finished object with no protruding parts, easy to handle and store. The structure, made of lightweight high-strength metal, only stands out when the ladder is open, retracting into the overlapping ABS resin body (Cyclolac) which, in the practicable part, describes a double grid of overlapping 'windows', hinged vertically (to allow them to be closed like a packet) and used as steps with non-slip treatment. From Legnano to MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the road can be a long one. Velca travels it entirely thanks to a staircase, an object that in the catalogues of the Legnano-based company is at the top of the list of 'complements'.
