Item description

Italian painting of the second half of the seventeenth century. Oil painting on canvas of the Neapolitan school attributable to the great painter Domenico Viola: specialized in religious subjects he was a pupil of Andrea Vaccaro and Mattia Preti and is also known for being the master of Francesco De Mura (the work is currently not accompanied by Expertise, but it is possible to obtain it upon payment of the related additional costs). Painted with considerable pictorial quality and character depicting Maria Maddalena who strips of vanity. We find the iconographic elements typical of its representation, such as the skull in the hands, symbol of memento dying. The ecstatic expression and the use of the chiaroscuro technique emphasize the drama of the scene while the theatrical gestures makes the composition dynamic. Picture already restored with Rintelo, replacement of the frame and recovery of color in small points. Cake of the nineteenth century in carved and golden wood, with some signs of the time. Overall operates in good conservative state. Painted light h 99 x l 76 cm.
